Once a year on or about Valentine’s night, in our area, salacious salamanders of the genus Ambystoma – our “Mole Salamanders” – the Northwestern and Long-toed Salamanders gather in their natal ponds and sidle up to each other in a courtship dance where males offer up their spermatophores for the females to fertilize their eggs with.  Come on a tour of one of Seattle’s last amphibian breeding ponds with enthusiastic and knowledgeable naturalist Stewart Wechsler to see some of these amorous amphibians in their watery love nests that few of us ever see, then for a short walk into the forest where 2 other species of salamander that don’t breed in ponds still live.  Though these salamanders are silent, the Barred Owls might serenade us with their hoots or screams.  I will share my 3 flashlights and binoculars.  If possible, RSVP – ecostewart@gmail.com or 206 932-7225 (land), so I can know to add sessions if the group is getting large.  Adults $15, kids, seniors $10

  1. Sounds great Stewart, I’m excited! I’ll be there and I’ll be conservative with lighting.

  2. Any problems with bringing a camera (and of course necessarily using a flash)?

    • Stewart says:

Do bring a camera! Flashes should be OK, but hopefully not so frequent as to interfere with others having a good experience.
